Pieces in your bedroom should reflect your style as well as serving your needs of functionality. Fortunately, manufacturers will offer a diversity of options on each piece. Below we will look at some popular pieces of bedroom furniture, as well as the different options available.

Beds

Bed frames and mattresses come in a variety of sizes to fit every need. They include:

  1. Twin (39" wide x 75" long) typically seen in bunk beds
  2. Full (54" wide x 75" long) Bit larger than a twin
  3. Queen (60" wide x 80" long) Good for small spaces where you need a bigger bed
  4. Cal. King (72" wide x 84" long) the largest
  5. Eastern King (76" wide x 80" long) Regular king size

The choice of your bed should be made according to your size and whether or not you will sleep in it alone. Of course, the size of your bedroom is also a factor, as you will want to be able to get around the edges of the bed for cleaning purposes and to access closet doors and such. Children's beds are commonly twin size, they are very versatile and space can be maximized by choosing bunk beds or trundles. A trundle is a bed within a bed, the trundle slides under the main bed and is perfect for sleepover parties. Daybeds are another space saving design, combining a regular bed into a couch like format. Three sides of the bed wrap around like a couch and lining the back and sides with pillows gives you a comfortable place to sit and read during the day.

The traditional bed comes fully equipped with a tall headboard and low footboard. A platform bed on the other hand offers a lower profile choice. This popular choice in Europe and Asia has recently found a following in the America. The bed is lower to the ground, which makes it cooler at night, plus you can add drawers underneath for more storage.

While full beds are, a full 15" wider than a twin is when two people try to share the space it is more cramped than if each had a twin. Unbelievably, a queen does not offer more room than a twin if two people are sharing it. The best size for a shared bed is a king size, this will give each person a lot more room; however, the beds themselves are quite large and may not fit into all rooms.

Night Stands

Everyone likes a nightstand by the bed and the variety of sizes and designs reflect this. Many offer doors, drawers, or a combination of the two. The choice will ultimately fall to your personal choice and the feature that will be most useful to you. Watch that you get a table of the correct height; it should be equal to the height of your bed.

Armoires

When it comes to armoires, there are many choices outside of what you may think of as traditional. Early armoires contained a hanging rod behind hinged double doors with drawers below. Today however armoires double as entertainment centers. This lets you put your television behind closed doors when not in use. These pieces have roll up or slide in doors that hide away while you watch television. Below may be drawers or doors for more storage, you can also find these units made for computers, with a sliding keyboard platform and a built in surge protector. Regardless of the type you need these pieces of furniture are also quite large so you will have to balance needs with available space.

Dressers and Chests

Dressers and chest of drawers are basically used for the same purpose. A dresser will be wider with drawers that are lined up horizontally, while a chest will be taller and line the drawers vertically. Which to use will be mostly personal preference however once again space may play a key role. Another choice is the mule chest; this is an oversized dresser and often has different storage options along with drawers. Chests are typically a single column of drawers stacked on one another. Though even these have a variety of styles, a man's chest may have drawers combined with shelves behind double doors.

These pieces will be larger than a standard chest. Sweater chests are another variation and will have large shelves that are just right for storing sweaters. For the ladies there are lingerie chests, these are normally thinner than a regular chest while still containing a column of drawers. Overall, the choice in chests or dressers is dependent on its use. If you have many large items to store, there you will want deep drawers that you do not have to over stuff. Packing them to tightly and forcing them shut will lead to a break down in the unit.

Mirrors

Mirrors are as varied as the other pieces mentioned above. You can have them attached to your dresser or hang them on the wall. Some manufacturers even offer the option of a tri mirror, which is attached to your dresser, and have adjustable hinged mirrors perfect for applying make up. Lastly, there are also freestanding mirrors that leave you the convenience of moving them as necessary, and they are great for checking your overall appearance.

Loft beds are every kid's dream, and full loft beds make it a reality even when they are grown up. Full loft beds are ideal for small apartments or college dorm rooms, or when you are sharing a room with others. They save space, offer privacy, provide additional space for all your stuff, and are a lot of fun. A full loft bed is a large bed, generally 78 inches long, 44 inches wide and 71 inches tall. They are sturdy and can take the weight of an adult weighing more than 200 pounds.

Full loft beds come in various sizes (full, twin, twin extra long, queen), and they can also be customized to special sizes, depending upon the size of the room and height of the ceiling. The height of the bed is an important aspect, as the whole idea of the bed is to have extra space under it to house drawers, shelves, storage racks, tables, chairs, computer desks, entertainment centers, TV armoire, bookshelves, dressers, toy racks, and lots of other things.

There are certain aspects to be considered when installing a loft bunk bed. The most important thing is personal safety- ensure that the safety rail along both the sides of the top bed is high enough to keep you securely in bed. The ceiling should be at least 33 inches above the top bed to prevent the most common head-bump injuries. The top bed should also be clear of fire fighting equipment, emergency doors, ventilation, windows or air-conditioning/heating systems. Any wiring within the bed should also be clear and free from the bed.

Loft bunk beds have price tags starting from around $300. There are pre-assembled as well as ready-to-build kits available.
